How to Love Your Home Again
When life gets busy, our homes usually suffer. Perhaps we don’t have time to tackle the mountains of clutter we've accumulated, or to replaster that peeling wall. Or maybe we lack the motivation to clean after a long workday. Over time, it’s easy to fall out of love with your home, but it doesn’t take much to reignite the spark.
Whether it’s changing your accessories, treating your home to a funky paint job or simply seeing your home through fresh eyes, there are plenty of ways to bring an interior back to life. Here are five ideas to get you started.
1. Bring Life Indoors
Update the greenery in your home for a quick and easy refresh. Household plants help to purify the area and can be useful de-stressors, so bringing the outdoors in can benefit your home in more ways than one. Aloe plants, rubber trees, and English ivy are easy to care for and will look beautiful in your home.
2. Rotate Your Accessories
One of the easiest ways to change the color palette of a room is to rotate the accessories. Take everything off your shelves, mantlepieces, desk, bedside cabinets and anywhere else that displays photos or knick-knacks, then mix them up. You can also do this with cushions, rugs and throws. You’d be amazed how different a room can look with minimal effort.
3. Add a Pop of Color
Sometimes, a pop of color is all that’s needed to cheer up a room, so why not paint a feature wall this weekend? Yellow is bright and fun, and fails to make anyone unhappy. If you can’t repaint, there are plenty of other ways to make your home more colorful. You could hang a new art print, lay a patterned area rug or just mix up your accessories to draw the eye to bold and bright shades. If all else fails, a beautiful bunch of flowers in the center of your dining table will lift the mood instantly.
4. See Through Fresh Eyes
There’s nothing like a few weeks or months away to help us see our homes through fresh eyes. Perhaps you’ve outgrown your current home and you need time to think about whether it's time to move, or maybe you just need space away from your four walls to decide what needs doing. Booking an extended holiday or visit abroad will offer perspective on your current situation and help you enjoy a higher standard of living, if only for a while.
5. Find a Home Away From Home
As you know too well, a once vibrant living room suddenly looks dull and lifeless and a previously calm bedroom now feels cluttered. It’s amazing how quickly we can tire of our homes and it’s human nature to want to change our surroundings once in a while. So embrace change with this fifth recommendation.
The good news is, it doesn’t take much for us to fall back in love with our homes – sometimes a few small changes or time away from the house is all it takes.
